Track 1: Plastic surgery

Plastic surgery and procedures change, restore, or enhance your appearance. There are many reasons for wanting to change or enhance your looks. If you have had burns or other injuries, were born with a birth defect, or want to change parts of your body for other reasons, you may choose to have a cosmetic surgery or procedure. Reconstructive surgery is typically done to improve a visible scar, skin condition, or malformed body part caused by an injury, a surgery, a disease, or a birth defect. These problems can affect your day-to-day life, including your job, your relationships, and your self-esteem.

Track 2: Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery and procedures change, restore, or enhance your appearance. There are many reasons for wanting to change or enhance your looks. If you have had burns or other injuries, were born with a birth defect, or want to change parts of your body for other reasons, you may choose to have a cosmetic surgery or procedure. Although the outward effects may be similar or even identical, the terms cosmetic and reconstructive surgery are not interchangeable. The plastic surgeon performs cosmetic surgery to reshape normal structures of the face or body in order to enhance the patient's appearance and self-esteem. Reconstructive surgery is performed to correct abnormalities of facial or body structures caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, injuries, previous or concurrent surgeries, infection, tumors, or other disease. The purpose of reconstructive surgery is generally to improve function, but it may also be used to restore a normal appearance.

Track 3: Rhinoplasty and Otoplasty

The feeling of nasal patency is related to the dimensions of the nasal cavity. After aesthetic reduction rhinoplasty, the cross-sectional areas of the nose may decrease critically. Rhinoplasty is a common surgical procedure for people of all ages to reshape the bridge, tips, or nostrils of the nose to a desired shape and size for cosmetic and functional purposes. Connecticut plastic surgeon Anya Kishinevsky provides exceptional rhinoplasty solutions to her patients using advanced techniques to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing results. Patients with large or protruding ears may be self-conscious about their appearance. This is especially true for children who are subjected to embarrassment by peers because their ears stick out. People may feel forced to hide their ears behind hats or their hair. Otoplasty, or ear surgery, which is a safe and highly effective procedure that alters the size and shape of the ears to improve their appearance and boost patients' self-esteem.

Track 4: Breast Reconstruction

A mastectomy or radiation therapy will leave insufficient tissue on the chest wall to cover and support a breast implant. The use of a breast implant for reconstruction almost always requires either a flap technique or tissue expansion. A TRAM flap uses donor muscle, fat and skin from a woman’s abdomen to reconstruct the breast. The flap may either remain attached to the original blood supply and be tunnelled up through the chest wall, or be completely detached, and formed into a breast mound. Alternatively, DIEP or SGAP flap techniques which do not use muscle but transport tissue to the chest from the abdomen or buttock.

However, Oral and maxillofacial surgery is universally recognised as one of the specialties of dentistry and all oral and maxillofacial surgeons must obtain a university degree in dentistry before beginning residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The division of Oral and maxillofacial surgery is committed to providing the best training in the discipline as well as providing the highest quality of care to patients in both an ambulatory and inpatient setting.

Track 7: Non-Surgical Aesthetic Procedures

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures involve products, such as botulinum toxin (botox), or techniques that make the skin look smoother, or make marks on the skin less obvious. Stopping the aging process and living eternally has been an enduring human desire, sought by Egyptian pharaohs, Chinese emperors, and Ponce de Leon's search for the Fountain of Youth. Cosmetic medicine has developed a number of nonsurgical procedures that can camouflage the effects of sun exposure and the passing years. These procedures seem to be gaining in popularity versus surgical procedures. There are also procedures to change the way teeth look, such as making them whiter or straighter.

Track 8: Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumours or disease. It is generally performed to improve functions, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by most health insurance policies, although coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary greatly. Using a wide range of reconstructive techniques, plastic surgeons mend holes and repair damage primarily through the transfer of tissue from one part of the body to another. Their main aim is to restore the body, or the function of a specific part of the body, to normal. However, plastic surgeons carrying out reconstructive surgery also try to improve and restore appearance. Wherever possible they attempt to minimise the visual impact of the initial wound or defect, and the impact of the surgery itself.

Track 9: Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery (Birth Defects altered by Plastic Surgery)

In children, craniofacial reconstruction is done to repair abnormalities in the shape of the child's skull and facial features resulting from birth defects or genetic disorders. It is also done to repair traumatic injuries resulting from accidents or child abuse. Craniofacial reconstruction in children requires special techniques and this surgical field encompasses several different surgical subspecialties. By virtue of their combined evolution, technology adoption and creation of a multidisciplinary teamwork have helped to overcome the complexity associated. Advances in anesthesia, surgical techniques, and technology have enhanced the good outcomes and safety. Craniofacial surgery has thus emerged from the valuable contributions of neurosurgery, plastic surgery, occuloplastic, ENT, and head and neck surgery planning because the surgeon must allow for future growth of the child's facial bones and skull.

Track 10: Facial Rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation refers to the combination of cosmetic procedures used to restore your facial features to their previous youthful appearance. While a facelift is often the anchor or foundation for much facial rejuvenation, other procedures can complement and enhance the result. Surgical procedures such as eyelid surgery, brow lift and facial implants can help correct specific problem areas on the face. Nonsurgical treatments including, fillers, neurotoxins (botulinum toxins) and fat injections can be used for volume enhancement and wrinkle and fold eradication. Laser skin resurfacing or other light modalities can be utilized to improve skin texture and correct skin blemishes or age spots.

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is a world leader in plastic surgery. After a year-long process, the Society has produced the ISAPS Biennial Global Survey of plastic surgeons and procedures in the top 25 countries and regions – representing 75% of all procedures in 2009.  The ISAPS Survey marks the first time reliable international plastic surgery data has been obtained and analysed by independent statistical specialists. For the last ten years, the consensus has been that breast augmentation was the most popular plastic surgery procedure. The ISAPS Global Survey reveals a new trend with liposuction representing 18.8% of all surgical procedures, followed by breast augmentation at 17%, and blepharoplasty 13.5%, Rhinoplasty at 9.4% and abdominoplasty at 7.3%. The popularity of surgical procedures varied by country with Brazil, the United States, China, Mexico, India and Japan the dominant countries for the top five procedures. Reflecting both advances in cosmetic surgery innovation and the desirability of less expensive treatments, the number of non-surgical procedures performed by plastic surgeons actually topped surgical procedures.  While there is no previous baseline of information against which to compare these figures, there can be no doubt that this is a dramatic turn of events. The top five non-surgical procedures are: toxins or neuromodulators injections (32.7%), hyaluronic acid injections (20.1%), laser hair removal (13.1%), autologous fat injections (5.9%) and IP Laser treatment (4.4%). The countries where non-surgical procedures were performed were dominated by the United States, Brazil, Mexico and China and to a lesser extent by Japan, Hungary, South Korea, India and Germany.  In 2005, there were 10.2 million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States, an increase of 11% from 2004 and a 38% compared with 2000.This number includes 3,839,387 Botox treatments, 1,033,581 chemical peels, 837,711 microdermabrasion, 782,732 laser hair removals, 589,768 vein sclerotherapies, 323,605 liposuctions, 298,413 Rhinoplasty, 291,350 breast augmentations, 230,697 blepharoplasties, 134,746 abdominoplasties, 114,250 breast reductions, 793 vaginal rejuvenation procedures, 337 calf augmentations, and 206 pectoral implants. Forty per cent of those undergoing cosmetic procedures are repeat patients; 34% have multiple procedures at the same time.

Why Florida?

After years of aggressive, coordinated effort, Florida has firmly established itself as a true hub for the Plastic Surgery. Today, Florida is home to some of the nation's most highly regarded research centres; over 1,000 biotech, pharmaceutical and medical devices companies; industry leaders - including Actavis, Arthrex, Bristol Meyers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Noven, and Steripak.

The North American market accounts for about 45% of the global market. However, the dominance of the U.S. is shifting towards Asia, particularly in the energy- based devices segment. Asia is regarded as the next frontier and the number of physicians and clinics in China and India has been steadily rising, along with medical tourism in the region. In the injectables and devices category, the E.U. occupies the second position behind the U.S. Brazil continues to be a strong market for aesthetics and cosmetic procedures. Russian market is also experiencing fast growth than many E.U. countries and the Russian market is particularly strong for devices and topical.

Another growth market is for body shaping procedures that involves reduction of fat, cellulite, skin laxity and vein removal. An injectable drug, currently in clinical trials is most likely to become a game changer in body contouring segment in the near future. On July 10, 2014, FDA has accepted the filing of New Drug Application (NDA) for the drug ATX-101 (deoxycholic acid) by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals. Plug-in at-home devices for treating sun damage, hair removal, skin decoloration, acne, hair growth, skin texture, microdermabrasion and cellulite continue to expand particularly in developed markets. As a new innovation, the aesthetic market is expected to witness the launching of transepidermal drug delivery technologies for facilitating topical treatments.

Statistics of Universities, Companies and Associations Worldwide associated with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery:

Projections: Growth by next 5-10 years:

An astonishing 20 million plastic surgery procedures around the world were undertaken last year, according to new figures. They included 50,000 pairs of buttocks being augmented in Brazil; 107,000 pairs of eyes being widened in South Korea – many of them to be made more ‘western’; 1.35 million Americans having their breasts enlarged and 705 British men have their moobs removed. These statistics, published by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, show how far the concept of beauty has changed in the last generation, and hint at how, in many cultures, going to a cosmetic surgeon, rather than a cosmetics counter, is guaranteed way to reduce the signs of ageing. The U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) estimated that all physicians and surgeons will see an 18% job growth in the years 2012-2022.

The other big restraint on plastic surgery has been scarring. The shine on a burn victim's face, the loss of full joint function after injury, or the rough raised edges of a graft are all the result of scar tissue. But scar-free healing will be available by 2020.
